Celebrate National Hydration Day with Style!

Celebrate National Hydration Day with Style!

Today is National Hydration Day and we wanted to celebrate by exploring the topic, why it is important, and how to this day a little more BeautyFull!

Let’s “dive in” to water!

According to the Harvard School of health, “Experts recommend drinking roughly 11 cups of water per day for the average woman and 16 for men.” If you are like us, then the first thing that you thought when you read this was, “What?! That’s a ton of water! There’s no way…” But yes, it’s true. Making sure that you drink enough water and keep your body hydrated is important for many reasons; maintaining your body temperature, detoxing your system, lubricating your joints, and of course to keep your skin healthy and glowing.

Remember, this number is just a baseline amount. If you are exercising, working outdoors, or are in warm temperatures then you will need to increase the amount of water that you drink, because your body will be losing more water.

If you feel thirsty, then you are already dehydrated. The best way to avoid this is to look at how often you are drinking, what you are drinking, and to make a plan that involves constantly drinking small amounts throughout the day instead of relying on forcing yourself to consume large amounts at once just to meet your daily quota.

First, take a look at what you are drinking. Are you constantly sipping coffee throughout the day, sweet tea, soda, sports drinks, etc.? All of these items do contain water, but they also contain caffeine, sugar, and added artificial ingredients (not to mention calories)! Water is always your healthiest option.

Maybe you know this, but you just can’t stand the thought of drinking that many cups of water throughout the day. Let’s look at some ways to have fun with it!

Infuse Your Water

Want some added flavor without the added sugars and calories? Infuse your water with fresh fruit, vegetables, and herbs. Not only do infused waters look GORGEOUS, but they “infuse” your drink with added fiber, vitamins, and flavor!

Many of these combinations have added health benefits too! For example, Mint, Green Tea, and Lime are known to promote fat burning and digestion (not to mention, you will have amazing breath)! Water that has been infused with Lemon helps to support healthy skin and skin texture by regulating our pH levels, plus it also supports good kidney health.

One of our favorite places to look for delicious combinations and to learn their health benefits is Pinterest, but a simple Google search on “Infused Water Recipes” will work as well! Below are a few combinations that we have tried and loved.

Refreshing

      • Cucumber and Mint
      • Blackberry and Mint
      • Watermelon
      • Cucumber and Lemon

Citrus/Fruity

      • Lemon, Lime, and Orange
      • Strawberry and Lemon
      • Raspberry and Lime
      • Mango, Pineapple, and Peach

For the Adventurous

      • Blueberry and Basil
      • Grapefruit and Rosemary
      • Grapefruit and Jalapeño
      • Lavender and Lime

Pro-Tip: Squeeze in a tiny bit of the fruits’ juice into your water to give some added flavor!

Dress Up Your Water

Treat yourself to a fun container to drink your water out of. Maybe splurge on that Yeti, or S’well bottle that you have been eying, order something custom with your initials on it from Etsy, find something at Target or TJ Maxx that is your favorite color, buy a Tervis Tumbler with your favorite hobby on it, or a tumbler with your favorite sport’s team’s logo… you get the idea. Find something that will make you happy to carry it around, something that makes you feel good every time that you see it.

Not only is a reusable container healthy for the environment, cutting down on plastic waste from water bottles, but it will actually prompt you to drink more, which is healthier for you.

Get Creative with Ice

Not only are ice cubes that are frozen with fruit inside of them stunning, but they allow you to infuse your water with flavor without having to store an entire pitcher of one flavor in your fridge.

In addition to all of the combinations above, the below options make beautiful ice cubes! If these ice cubes are for a special occasion and you are worried about aesthetic try pairing one warm color (red, orange, yellow) with one cool color (blue, green, dark purple).

      • Raspberry and Mint
      • Strawberry and Basil
      • Pineapple and Coconut Water
      • Lemon and Lime

You can even freeze each fruit separately and keep a variety in your freezer, then mix and match based upon your mood for the day!

Or swap your ice cube tray for popsicle molds for a dessert-like treat.

Pro Tip: If you want a pretty, clear, ice cube then be sure to use filtered water. Boil it first, let it cool completely, and then boil again and let it cool completely again.

Eat Your Water

Not all of the water that you consume throughout the day needs to come from the actual source! Did you know that your favorite fruits and vegetables are loaded with H20 as well? The water within these plants is infused with minerals, fiber, vitamins and electrolytes. Your body is able to utilize this water more efficiently, and absorb it more deeply, contributing to extreme hydration. Of course, we are not suggesting that this become your main source of hydration. You should still pay attention to nutritional and dietary guidelines.

Below are some options that are extremely high in water content:

      • Bell Peppers – 92% water
      • Broccoli – 92% water
